Originally, an RSAC advisory was supposed to be displayed on the screen, ala Heretic.

Tile #0032

The LA skybox underwent some changes. This is the beta's version: (five tiles, joined in HTML; sections 2, 4, and 5 different)

Still a WIP, here's LA from the v1.0 shareware: (five tiles, joined in HTML; sections 2 and 4 different)

This skybox includes a view of the ocean. In the final, it is all starry. A similar skybox was used in Duke Caribbean. (one tile, repeated five times in HTML)

The fire hydrant is seen at a different angle.

Tile #0982

Looks like a door texture.

Tile #1097

This appears to be an early version of a bloodprint switch.

Tile #1154

It looks like these are special gibs for the cactuses in E1L5. In the final, a green-palettized version of the paper scrap (SCRAP3) is used.

Tile #1275 Tile #1276 Tile #1277

These are some tally marks, defined in DEFS.CON even in the Atomic Edition as define SCRATCH 1393. In the final, all the tiles but II are overwritten with other art.

I discovered some disabled code in the Duke 3D source code release (GAME.C, line 1437) that would take a number value and draw the necessary tally marks to the screen. For example, to display the number 12:

Unfortunately, there is no trace of any applications this may have had.

Originally, the death animations did not have any blood added to them. I assume this is because the artwork team had not drawn blood over Chuck Jones' renders.

For the trooper, this extends to the begging frames as well. The second and third rows are what they would look like in-game, with the proper palettes.

One of my favorite finds. The title screen did not have the "WARNING: ADULT CONTENT" text on the bottom.

In v1.0, they redrew his lips, because they were slightly messed up in the beta.

The RPG originally was tilted, and shaded heavily:

In v1.0, they removed the shading, but it was still tilted:

Battlelord frames are different:

different bluefont:

End-of-Level screen. I'm not sure what's different here. (frames 1-3 are different)

The cutscene's tiles were not cropped as much as the final, but other than that they remained relatively unchanged. Frame 6 is missing blood, like the death animations. The beta is also missing the final three frames where the boss erupts in blood and guts.

I added the v1.0 version to this one because it was replaced as well. The trooper is in its default, incorrect color.
